This evening's news has motivated me to leave, at least temporarily, my
status as lurker. I did not see the recent 60 Minutes episode which
featured Dr. Jack Kevorkian and apparently has resulted in his arrest for
murder. Dr. Kevorkian has been one of my heroes because of his fight for
the right of the individual to make his own decisions about the
disposition of his life. I expect that life is the most important value
of most people on this list. Why else an interest in cryonics?

But beyond that, Dr. Kevorkian's involvement in a case of euthanasia,
apparently with the intent of getting arrested and having the issue
decided in court, may have significant implications for cryonicists. My
guess is that it will make a big difference to a lot of people if/when the
right to life is seen to include the right to death on one's own terms.
If nothing else, it may take some of the anxiety and guesswork out of
arrangements for cryopreservation.

As noted above, I did not see the show (CBS doesn't come through very well
in my part of the boondocks), and I don't know particulars beyond the
sound bite of the evening news. If the situation is as claimed, Dr.
Kevorkian deserves all the support we can give him.
