X-Message-Number: 11078 From: Thomas Donaldson <> Subject: Very fast, duplicates cease to be so. And questions for Mr. Platt Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 22:41:50 +1100 (EST) To Joe Strout: It seems very clear to me that if we made a duplicate of you the changes which made that duplicate cease to be a duplicate would happen very rapidly. Just think a minute: first, the duplicate would not be in the same place as you. Second, the duplicate would not be married to your wife (assuming you are married), nor possess ANYTHING which you possess --- down to your underwear. If you are employed, your duplicate will be unemployed. To Mr. Platt: I am glad that you have other things to think of than such issues of identity and awareness. We poor sods have a deep interest in that issue because of the possibility that we might not retain our identity after suspension. You, of course, obviously have somehow been assured that such an outcome will not happen to YOU. And while I cannot speak for others, I think it should be clear to you that my opinions are not based solely upon what I hear on Cryonet --- quite the contrary. As for Bob Ettinger, I will point out that he has discussed Turing's ideas on Cryonet in much more detail before; if you had been paying attention, you will know that he "dismissed" it only because he'd already posted arguments against it. Or is he to be said to "dismiss" Turing's arguments if he only alludes to previous postings? Not only that, but he gave one argument against Turing's Test in a posting after that in which he dismissed it. As for just what we do with our time, I'm glad that you can do things so that at every instant of your activities will help your future suspension. Just think: when you brush your teeth you are helping your future suspension; when you go out to a restaurant you're helping your future suspension; when you read a book or article, or write one, you're always helping your future suspension. When you post on Cryonet, you're helping your future suspension. When you lie asleep at night you're helping your future suspension. I really don't know how you do it. Perhaps you can tell the rest of us how, so that we too can go to bed after a long day knowing that in going to bed we're also helping our suspension. Best and long long life to all, Thomas Donaldson Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=11078
