Subject: Cryonics--Open Directory

Some time ago, a small company called NewHoo put together a Web
directory called The Open Directory Project. The premise was that
automated search engines and/or small editorial staffs cannot put
together a useful directory with such a growing Web. So....

"The Open Directory Project's goal is to produce the most
comprehensive directory of the web, by relying on a vast army of
volunteer editors... These net-citizens can each organize a small
portion of the web and present it back to the rest of the
population, culling out the bad and useless and keeping only the
best content."

The assumption is that these editors will be highly knowledgeable in
the areas they edit. Recently Netscape bought NewHoo and acquired
the Open Directory Project. Since then it has been growing rapidly.

Other advantages: "The directory will be more open than before. In
the spirit of open development, and fitting with the Mozilla ideals,
we are creating a free use license to allow individuals and
organizations to take advantage of and use copies of the directory
that they can crawl, archive and reuse on their machines. The
ability to do this was one of the key reasons for us to go with
Netscape."

(Quotes from the on-line info at the website.)

To see the general directory, go to directory.mozilla.org.

I am the editor for the page on Science:Cryonics.
http://directory.mozilla.org/Science/Cryonics/

I have now linked 44 sites on cryonics and related subjects,
including the home page for all cryonics groups I could find on the
net. Included are subsections for "Simple Introductions to
Cryonics," "Nanotechnology," and "Futuristic sites of interest to
Cryonicists" (Transhumanism, Life Extension, Uploading). There is
also a separate links page under Science:Nanotechnology edited by
others.

Please take a look at the Cryonics page. You may suggest other
links right on the site, and I will check them later to see if they
fit. I am hoping that many of you might link to this page from
your home pages, as sort of a one-stop-shopping point for cryonics
searching. I have not attempted to link to every home page of every
cryonicist and I have no intention of doing so. I have only linked
to sites which have solid information on cryonics or multiple links
to other sites and articles.

If you want to become a subject editor yourself, it is quite easy.
HTML knowledge is not required -- the Project has automatic editing
software that is simple to use. There is a place on each topic page
to apply to be an editor. If your topic is not listed, go to a
related topic and apply from there.

Strictly a volunteer editor. I do not own stock in Netscape or
NewHoo.
