Does anybody know what the cryogenic properties of perluorocarbons are?
These interesting compounds, which are liquid at room temerature, have
been used in some interesting experiments. There is the famous one where
mice were completely suspended in one of these liquids, and after some
initial shock, began to inhale the stuff just like it was air. The
liquid was oxygenated beforehand and the mice suffered no ill effects.
Perfluorocarbons are also being investigated as possible blood
substitutes. They do not damage cells at normal body temperature. The
big question I have is : Do these things form crystals at low
temperature or not? Anybody know?
