X-Message-Number: 11434 Date: Sat, 20 Mar 1999 18:43:03 -0500 From: "Stephen W. Bridge" <> Subject: Open Directory changes To CryoNet From Steve Bridge March 20, 1999 CHANGE IN OPEN DIRECTORY PROJECT ADDRESSES. Internet fluidity and reorganization have caused some changes at the Open Directory Project. ODP is an Internet index with hundreds of volunteer editors each taking on several subject categories and looking for the best web sites. I told you all about this a couple of months ago and gave you the url for my page on cryonics. Since then two things have happened: 1. The home page address for the Open Directory has changed to http://dmoz.org I don't know the entire history and I'm not quite sure where that comes from. But the list of web sites has expanded hugely in the past two months, especially in the sciences area. 2. The top-level editor of the Science category had a day off and decided to totally reorganize the Science subjects -- without telling the editors of the various pages and without stopping to think that thousands of people out there already have hyperlinks to these subject pages on their home pages or bookmarks. The subjects were rearranged, the links died, chaos ensued, and flames abounded. My cryonics page (and any other category the Science editor didn't quite know what to do with) disappeared into a vague subcategory: "Around and About Science." It was pretty frustrating for this long-time librarian. But we've gotten it all straightened out again and the Science editor learned that people DO notice what he does. I think my subjects at least will be stable for a long while. I just keep telling myself -- "That's the price you pay for freedom. That's the Internet." Please change your links for the Cryonics heading to: http://dmoz.org/Science/Biology/Cryobiology/Cryonics The advantage gained here is that I am now also editing the entire Cryobiology heading, which didn't even exist before. I've found several very interesting cryobiology sites already and would welcome suggestions for others. There are places on each subject page to leave suggestions for other url's. Cryobiology is at: http://dmoz.org/Science/Biology/Cryobiology Finally, they also added another page for me to edit on cryogenic technology at http://dmoz.org/Science/Technology/Cryotechnology This will include sites for freezer and dewar manufacturers, the Cryogenic Society of America, various bicycle and instrument LN2 dippers, and whatever else seems to fit. I've even found a very good discussion of cryosurgery for prostate cancer, which will start an entire new subsection on cryosurgery once I have some more sites for it. As before, suggestions for your favorite sites are welcome. Please leave them on the appropriate Open Directory Page. If you have time on your hands and really want to be useful, I could use some co-editors on the Cryobiology and Cryotechnology pages. (The Cryonics page is pretty stable right now and doesn't need much work.) With your help, we can really make this a great resource for all of us and everyone else on the Web.
