Subject: For Thomas Nord: why is self-starvation "no good"?
Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 21:58:36 +1000 (EST)

Hi again!

To Thomas Nord:
It's not that self starvation fails to escape autopsy, it's that it is
a pretty rough thing to do. In that context, I don't understand just
what you mean by it being "no good": yes, it will cause damage, but
far less than autopsy would. And for that matter, since we already know
that our current suspensions aren't perfect anyway, if someday the
damage of your suspension will be reversible I see no good reason why
the relatively minor damage of self-starvation won't be reversible too.

Not only that, but even if we learn how to perfectly cryopreserve our
brains, that leaves open the restoration of everything else. That too
is likely to be a much bigger project that the minor damage caused
by self-starvation.

As you will notice, I hardly LIKE the idea of self-starvation. But it
does seem to be RIGHT NOW the only option allowed to cryonicists who
face a brain-destroying illness. So if you don't have such an illness
right now, you might think of what you can do to make other options
allowable.

			Best and long long life,

				Thomas Donaldson
