Subject: Rotten Smell in Phoenix

Some time ago Thomas Nord was complaining about having found that the air
was bad in the Phoenix, AZ vicinity (including Scottsdale, where Alcor has
been located since 1994). I expressed some skepticism about the seriousness
of this, but now I have to say that the pessimism seems to have a
foundation. The smell of "burning" I have noticed before is back, and comes
and goes. Just recently Mr. Nord himself brought to my attention an article
by Donald Bartlett and James Steele about a silicon wafer plant in Phoenix
that is producing pollution and creating a "rotten egg" smell. That isn't
exactly how I would characterize the odor around here, but it is an
obnoxious one; maybe there is a connection.
