Hi!

Right here is Australia there is considerable attention to the current
situation in East Timor. Recently, under the UN, elections were held there
to determine if the people of East Timor wanted to remain part of
Indonesia or become independent. The election showed 5:1 support for
independence.

HOWEVER, both the army and a militia responded to this election by
killing as many supporters of independence as they could, and trucking
those they did not kill to unknown locations. The capital, Dili, is now
totally under the control of the militia and the army, with even the UN
compounds under seige.

I'm interested in 1) are these events reported at all on US television
or in US newspapers? 2) if reported, what are people saying?

Replies can come directly to me; unfortunately, Cryonet is presently the
only place available to me where I can ask this question. And yes, in the
great sweep of history, East Timor is hardly a large element, and its
people are few. No strategic interest of the US is involved.

I'm just asking this question because I'd like to know.

Best and long long life to all,

				Thomas Donaldson
