My feeling is that there is indeed a unique correct criterion of survival, 
although we don't know yet what it is. We are not (in any useful sense) free 
to concoct definitions. What finally emerges must satisfy both logic and 
biology. Whether we can adjust to it remains to be seen.

As for Dr. Goswami's view, mentioned by George Smith, it doesn't sound 
promising as sketched, but I plan to look at it.
