Those unfamiliar with cryptanalytic methods and wanting to learn more may be
interested in a new book Cryptorunes by Dr Clifford Pickover (IBM). It is by
no means a detailed text book but is entertaining whilst giving you a start
in understanding what is involved and includes many examples. There is also
a competition with a prize offered to the first solution.

The fact that the solution to encoded data can be found without knowing
every single equivalence is made very obvious. This would not apply if the
data is itself random numbers, but once something is known, blanks can be
filled in.
