X-Message-Number: 13796 Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 10:01:30 -0400 (EDT) From: Ben Best <> Subject: Cryonics Society of Canada Scientific Advisor Killed Dr. Malcolm Ramsay -- a professor at the University of Saskatchewan and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Cryonics Society of Canada -- has been killed in a helicopter crash in the high arctic near Resolute Bay. Dr. Ramsay was a world authority on polar bears. He has left a wife and two young children (ages 11 and 3) who miss him terribly. Dr. Ramsay's interest in cryonics was more intellectual than personal. He believed in preserving the "natural order" -- even including the sacrifice of his own life to the next generation (although he was not anticipating such an early death). He was unmoved by my vision of vast ecosystems engineered in colossal capsules in space. Nonetheless, at the insistance of his 11-year-old son, samples of Dr. Ramsay's tissues are being cryopreserved in hope of possible future cloning. Malcolm was a longtime personal friend and contemporary of mine. This event has allowed the ugly finger of death to touch me in a particularly personal way -- besides being yet another reminder of the fragility of life. Surprisingly, the Canadian National Post news story on Dr. Ramsay's death mentions his role as Cryonics Society of Canada Scientific Advisor.
