X-Message-Number: 1399 From: Subject: CRYONICS Alcor Laughlin Newsletter Date: Sat, 5 Dec 92 01:10:00 PST ALCOR LAUGHLIN CHAPTER NEWSLETTER MONDAY NOVEMBER 23RD 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM Robert L. Forbuss Eric Klien Jerry Searcy Tanya Jones Don Laughlin H. Jackson Zinn Katie Kars Carina Russell The above list does not include the two Mercy personnel that attended the meeting for a short while, including their person in charge of the Laughlin area. Note that many Las Vegans were unable to attend since we held our meeting during a work day. TERMINATING SUBSCRIPTIONS The following person will have his subscription terminated by the next issue unless he either attends the next meeting or sends a letter saying he wishes to remain on our mailing list: David S. Reyes. SPECIAL LOCATION -- MERCY MEDICAL SERVICES Our meeting was held at Mercy Medical Services as we negotiated with them for use of their services. Robert L. Forbuss, the President and CEO of Mercy Medical Services, attended the whole meeting and some other Mercy personnel attended part of the meeting. Mercy agreed to 1) enter our names and addresses into their databases so that any emergency calls from our homes would put Alcor's phone number on their computer screens 2) send us a letter saying they will honor our bracelets. Our next step is to speak with Dr. Otto Ravenhalt with the Clark County Health District. Dr. Ravenhalt develops the protocols that Mercy Medical Services is allowed to follow. He recently changed their determination of death protocols for instance. We need to convince Dr. Ravenhalt that there is a need for a cryonics protocol as well. Mercy is willing to follow any protocols that Dr. Ravenhalt approves. Don Laughlin will attempt to arrange a meeting with us and Dr. Ravenhalt. Mercy was quite friendly, they even showed us their 911 dispatch center while it was in use and the president of Mercy even said "I may join Alcor". While I don't expect him to actually join, it was a pleasant remark on his part. They even allowed us to continue with our regular meeting at Mercy headquarters after the meeting with them was over. My next step is to wait for Tanya Jones to receive the letter from Mercy both 1) telling us how we can get all our names and addresses entered in their database at once 2) saying that Mercy will honor our bracelets. Once I get this letter I will 1) give Mercy a list of all known Alcor members in Nevada 2) send a copy of this letter to the Fire Department to encourage them to honor our bracelets. If Tanya doesn't receive this letter promptly she should either 1) call Robert L. Forbuss and ask him what's the status on the letter or 2) call me and let me know she hasn't received the letter. LAS VEGAS MAYOR Cindy Putirka called the Las Vegas mayor to check on our status with the Fire Department. The mayor claimed that she had written two letters to the Fire Department requesting they cooperate with us. Cindy has asked for copies of these letters. PUTIRKA DOG In the last minutes, I mentioned that the Putirka's have been advised to speak to some of our new board members to rectify this problem. Cindy decided that she wished to write to all the board members but unfortunately Alcor was unwilling to provide their addresses. Alcor was willing to provide their phone numbers but Cindy preferred to write to them. Therefore Cindy has received their addresses from other sources and will be writing to the board members soon. H. JACKSON ZINN THANK YOU Jackson Zinn writes "Please thank Cindy Putirka for the elegant room she arranged for me in Las Vegas on Saturday." That's right! Cindy found him a beautiful free hotel room to use while Jackson Zinn visited Las Vegas. KATIE KARS THANK YOU I would like to thank Katie Kars for her $10.00 contribution to help cover the expenses of this newsletter. Three cheers for Katie! Cheer! Cheer! Cheer! STATE OF NEVADA SUPREME COURT LIBRARY AND STATE OF NEVADA LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL BUREAU. Eric Klien has provided the information from these two Nevada government agencies to Tanya Jones, Jerry Searcy, and H. Jackson Zinn as requested. DISCUSSION ABOUT POSSIBLE CHANGES AT ALCOR Eric Klien passed around documents about 1) Alternative Methods of Electing The Alcor Board of Directors and 2) Arguments in Favor of a Separate Patient-Care Organization. Since the documents were lengthy, it was the consensus that everyone wanted a month to have time to read them before discussing them. Copies of these documents are available on request. PUBLICITY Brenda Peters, an Alcor board member, has begun an outreach program for us based on all inquiries that Alcor has received in Nevada plus to any Alcor members in the area that we don't know about. Tanya Jones has also provided Alcor Nevada with a list of all the inquiries they have received from Nevada. A mailing has been sent out to them and we expect that more mailings will be sent to this list in the future. NEXT MEETING Our next meeting will be on the second Sunday of this month, December 13th, at 1:00 PM at the executive office in the Riverside casino in Laughlin, Nevada. Take 95 south from Las Vegas, through Henderson, where it forks between 95 and 93. Bear right at the fork and stay on 95 past Searchlight until you reach the intersection with 163 a little before the border with California. Go left on 163 and stay on it until you see signs for Laughlin. You can't miss the Riverside Casino in Laughlin, Nevada. For more information, call Eric Klien at (702) 255-1355. I'll be car pooling there with other Las Vegans. Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=1399
