X-Message-Number: 1445 Date: 14 Dec 92 16:58:49 EST From: Garret Smyth <> Subject: CRYONICS Environmentalists and recruitment When it comes to environmentalists there are a variety of shades of green. Frequently it is the dark green ones that hit the headlines, because extremism sells papers. However, not all environmentalist are dark greens - don't believe all you read in the papers. I don't particularly want to live on a planet with hardly any diversity of life, but all the lefties in the green movements put me off joining. The discussion about greens should not be "Should we recruit environmentalists" because if they want to join we should welcome them. There is a very good reason for this. We are a tiny organisation. We must expand or die. If someone signs up then they de facto agree on enough fundamental issues to be suspended. There is no reason to discriminate against someone just because they are environmentally minded. If you ran a health insurance plan would you suggest greenies shouldn't be recruited? (Alcor is just a rather experimental high tech health care system in some peoples' view) What if I were to join Friends of the Earth? Would you suggest my membership of Alcor be taken away? The real question of this thread is "Is it worth the effort involved in specifically targeting environmentalists". Personally I feel that to target all of them probably wouldn't be worth it, but a subsection (eg those who are also into sci-fi / technology etc) might be.
