X-Message-Number: 14656 Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 10:45:59 -0400 From: Sabine Atkins <> Subject: Your opinion please Hello all! My name is Sabine, since last year my Mother and I are members of the Cryonics Institute, and so far I've just been a lurker on this list. I'm also (although I'm living in the US now) member of the German Transhumanist Group DE:Trans. This group had a member who is very interested in making cryonics more popular in Germany. So far so good. However, this man now has chosen methods which jeopardize what DE:Trans wants to accomplish. What DE:Trans wants is: Informing people scientifically about cryonics, seeking possibilities to found a Cryonics Organization in Germany and helping people setting up contracts with American Cryonics Organizations. Instead the former member has founded the "Group of the Eighth Day of Creation"; he thinks a religious group would succeed in making cryonics more known to the public and overcoming legal barriers. So far, (as I understand) there are laws in Germany against cryonic suspension on German soil, but it is possible that German cryonics patients can be sent to the US by German local funeral directors. I have talked to an employee of a German funeral director about this. But DE:Trans and also I do not think that founding a church for cryonics will have the right results. In fact, we feel that this will be very counterproductive. The founder of the "Group of the Eigth Day of Creation" has left DE:Trans - and has accused its members for not doing anything regarding cryonics. What is your opinion? DE:Trans is interested in working closer together with American Cryonics Organizations. Do you see possibilities for this?
