Subject: a short bibliography on consciousness

Hi everyone!

I note an increased interest in the "identity" problem. At the same time,
there is actual work by scientists and philosophers on just that issue.
Over time, I have reviewed books on this subject and will probably
review more in CRYONICS.

It's not that the arguments on Cryonet are lacking so much as they
seem repetitive, and it would help all of us if we could simply refer
to arguments elsewhere and go on from there. No one on Cryonet is stupid,
and most participants have a high level of education. Still, a bit more
education ON THIS SUBJECT would not go awry at all... and besides might
help prevent a lot of repetition.

With this in mind, here are some books of interest to this debate/argument
or whatever it is:

LG Valliant CIRCUITS OF THE MIND
Steven Rose (ed) FROM BRAINS TO CONSCIOUSNESS
BJ Baars IN THE THEATER OF CONSCIOUSNESS
A Damasio THE FEELING OF WHAT HAPPENS: Body and Emotion in the Making of
   Consciousness
R Gosden CHEATING TIME
J Cornwell (ed) CONSCIOUSNESS AND HUMAN IDENTITY
GM Edelman BRIGHT AIR, BRILLIANT FIRE
DC Dennett CONSCIOUSNESS EXPLAINED
RL Nadeau MIND, MACHINES, AND HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS
JR Searle THE REDISCOVERY OF THE MIND
MS Gazzaniga MIND MATTERS: How mind and brain interact to create our
   conscious lives
J LeDoux THE EMOTIONAL BRAIN

None of these authors claims to have solved the problem, but all
have made a dent in it. It would help the discussion if we were all
aware of at least some of this work ... that would prevent repetition,
among other things.

Best wishes and long long life,
