Closed-cycle cryogenic refrigerators would eliminate the need for a continuous,
expensive, and vulnerable supply of bottled liquid nitrogen.

However, this approach has its own problems. No liquid nitrogen would be
required but an electrical outage or refrigerator failure could be a disaster.

Reliability could be enhanced with back-up power supplies, redundant
refrigeration systems, computer monitoring, and an emergency liquid nitrogen
bottle.

I assume economics rather then engineering is the obstacle.
