X-Message-Number: 1654 From: whscad1!kqb (Kevin Q Brown +1 201 386 7344) Subject: CRYONICS Driving Off New Members I can always tell when the bickering goes up and the S/N ratio goes down in the cryonics mailing list (CryoNet) by noting the increase in "unsubscribe" messages I get, especially from new members to the list. When posting a message to CryoNet, please bear in mind that the majority of people receiving the mailing list are not members of any cryonics organization; they joined the list just to learn something about cryonics. The mailing list thus serves as not only a means for cryonicists to communicate with each other, but also as an educational and (unofficially) a recruitment mechanism. If what new people learn, however, is that cryonicists are more interested in tearing themselves apart than saving themselves, they will go look elsewhere. (I find it ironic that several people recently discussed how to present the more controversial parts of cryonics so that they do not drive away interested people. Meanwhile, the mud-slinging has gotten thrown in the face of a lot of newcomers to cryonics.) Yet, there apparently is a lot of important mud-slinging to be done! That is why I set up the CRYONICS.POLITICS posting option for the 0014.* message thread. By using that, your message gets to the people who want to keep up-to-date on it, but it doesn't get inflicted on those people who just want a gentle introduction to what cryonics is all about. Kevin Q. Brown INTERNET or PS: There are two ways to receive the CRYONICS.POLITICS messages. You can look for an announcement of a new archive file in the "masthead" section of each digest and send to me email with a Subject line of the form "CRYOMSG 0014.xx" to retrieve it. Or, if you want to make sure you receive them all and also save the trouble of having to request each one as it comes, just ask me to put you on the special 0014.* cryonics politics mailing list.
