Subject: FLEA, summer 01

Flea, (French Laser Experimental Area) is a site I hope to dedicate to laser
works for brain reader. This is a project to bring to reality the uploading
idea in a twenty years time span. I have definned before the requirement for
a uploading system: Molecular scale scanning using x-ray quantum
nondemolition interferometer. The x-rays would be produced by a nuclear laser
pumped by a dye laser itsef pumped by an infrared metal vapor laser.

The power requirement at the IR laser level can be meet only within a shock
wave produced in a big rocket-like thruster (in the 300 MN thrust range). The
shock wave would be supplemented by an electric discharge. The electric power
is itself in the range of the US consumption, at least for some seconds, it
can only be produced by a Magneto-Hydro-Dynamical system whose primary energy
is anew a large rocket-like thruster.

This can't be built from nothing, an evolution program must be definned.
The first full scale system would divide the laser and the MHD thrusters into
5 smaller units, each with a capability in the 60 MN range. Each such
chamber would be feed a-la-V2 by a set of 200 injectors. This part of the
system may then be tested in a 300 kN thruster. I must so test both: a 300kN
system and the compatibility of many injectors in a single chamber. To fulfil
that second requirement, a small 5 kN thruster must be built, 20 or so of
them could then be bunched into a single 100 kN system.

The MHD and shock generator will be tested too on smaller system using cheap
solid burners. The first one will be a 15 kN.s total impulse device producing
3 kN thrust for five seconds.

The IR laser is super radiant, it didn't recycle the radiation between
mirrors. The dye system and the wave entanglement at its exit is a complex
optical system. It is too early to build them now, this part of the project
then concentrates on making the optical laboratory for that production and
financing it.

Common metal vapor lasers are powered by an electrical discharge produced in
a high temperature gas, this on stays in a kiln. The first IR laser will be
of that kind, it will test the "lasing" conditions in the polluted
environment of rocket combustion gas.

The initial project for the year 2001 was to start ground breaking works on
the FLEA main site. Closer scrutiny demonstrated that this strategy would
soak up all time and funds for at least three years only to build basic
infrastructures, without any real inovative technological activities. The
main site will be mostly usefull for building and testing large systems, this
is not the case now. So, all efforts was redirected in a way able to produce
some initial results faster.

There is the current state of the different segments of the project:

The IR laser-in -kiln: There has been a breaking ground work for the housing
of the system. More important: funding has been securred.

The 15 kN.s solid burner: Best fuel formulation has been tested, small
samples have been put into cast, initial firing test will come soon. The
first full scale element must be run at the end of the year. That testing is
outsourced because of legal problems.( This program is full paid).

The liquid 5kN thruster: Initial tests will be done with GOX/Alcohol
propelants, the evolution will be then towards LOX/RP1 or LOX/CH4. That
program is partly out sourced, it is full financed, first firing : end 2001
or first semester 2002.

The 300 kN thruster: Injector part financed, a low presure plastic model is
in the production pipe line, it will be first displayed to the general public
in September. A first batch of metal copies will be done on a CNC lathe. There
is an agreement on that work.

More elements will start in the fall, I am in the process to "thaw" $ 3 000.
to pay for them. The money will be at hand in September. A second money run
is in the making: It will be a $ 6 000. slice for financing the 2002
activities.

These sums are small, but they pay only "outside" elements. Individual work
is not paid, more: most elements are produced on a swap basis. If an
University for example was running a similar project, it would be right now
in the $ 50 000 domain.

There will be two ordinary reports on FLEA every year, some more message on
the subject may be sent about specific elements as they are added, deleted,
or tested.
