X-Message-Number: 17409 From: Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2001 01:49:26 EDT Subject: "Never volunteer for nothing!" I recently heard this quickly becomes the surviving recruit's creed in the armed services. I was never actually in the actual service per se, but generally pass on good advise anyway--particularly when I can just as easily learn the hard way. If you are volunteered to head up a large drawn out project for everyone, its quite an honor really while you sometimes have to do all the work and finance it too because it turns out to be a good bit easier and cheaper than recruiting and fund raising. The accolades are sure there though, so I guess it's all worth it in the end. In fact, someone very recently said to me (and everyone else agreed): "I only regret that you have but one life to give for your Country." Stuff like that just seems to make it all worthwhile somehow. Anyway, I am currently broke. It bugs me that I cannot contribute to the fund for James Swayze right now but I do make a commitment for a pledge of a minimum of a $100 in the not so distant future. I don't plan to stay broke. I recently learned not to volunteer for nothing. But, this is a very worthy exception. James, it appears that where there is a will there sometimes is a way. I am encouraged and happy for you and I agree with others that it is also a valuable project for Cryonics. A parting thought (also apparently in sync with others): It is noted that this whole idea tends to fairly well foul up good potential misunderstandings regarding Robert Ettinger's thoughts on altruism.
