Translation: The institute possesses a well equipped lab, which due to use for modern procedures, such as *plastination*, works continuously on improvements and extension of its collection. This is the only reference to plastination I could find on this site. The Magdeburger Anatomische Institut was founded in in1960. Magdeburg was then in the GDR, so English knowledge may not quite be as proliferate as you might expect in the former West Germany (they all learned Russian instead), but I have attached below the e-mail addresses of two scientists, who would be able to shed more light on the plastination procedure for anyone, who contacts them directly. I would conjecture, that they would use the process for fixation to allow better study of the brain, which appears to be their speciality. As a sample I have translated the below research summary. Translation: B4.2 Summary The amygdala plays an important part in generating specific and unspecific attention. Responsible for the therewith connected cortical activation appear to be the circuits between thalamus, amygdala and the cholinergic basal forebrain, the morphology and physiology in general and the cellular elements specifically of which are widely unknown. It is the aim of the application on hand to generate a morphological and electro- physiological characterization of the amygdalofugal projection neurons, which are under the direct influence of thalamic activity. Focal points are on the projection into the basal forebrain and into the entorhinal cortex. The basic circuits should be characterized with the help of simple and double tracer studies, combined tracer and immuno-cytochemical studies, electrophysiological characterization and follow-up intracellular marking of individual amygdalofugal projection neurons in vivo in conjunction with light- and electron microscopy. This study builds systematically on the previous work on the anatomy of thalamo-amygdalar connections (Subprojects B4, B5) and on the physiology of projection neurons of the lateral amygdala (Subproject B3), connects the respective years of expertise of the applicants and continues their successful cooperation for this period of advancement, both in method and content. The results are expected to provide indications of the substrate of subcortical signals transmitted over the amygdala into the basal forebrain, which are of significance for the "speedy" components of motivation and emotion dependent cortical activation of reaction.
