I might also add that American anti-intellectualism tends to limit the 
degree to which retrograde religious beliefs, and hence their agendas,  can 
gain widespread acceptance.  Studying the Bible and other theological 
writings seems too much like homework to have broad appeal in this society.  
Some futurists are forecasting that literacy will disappear in a few decades 
any way once we can interact with AI's by voice instead of text, so that 
probably bodes ill for scripture-based religions.

Of course, the trend towards "aliteracy" is already well underway:
