This is Rudi Hoffman writing from Daytona, FL. Some of us are trying to pull together a gathering of Cryonicists and others in Orlando on December 2, 2001. I would consider this a roaring success if we could pull a dozen of you wonderful people to do a potluck pitchin Dec. 2, this is a Sunday afternoon. And Evening... from 1:00 PM to 5:00 or whenever. Bring a covered dish, or a bag of chips and some soda, or whatever, but please consider joining us if you possibly can. Of course, there is no cost, no official presentation, just forward thinking cryonauts figuring out how to maybe live forever. I guarantee we have a lot of potentially life saving information to talk about. Dr. Shimon Horowitz has graciously offered his home, in an outstanding area of Northeast Orlando called Home. This location is very easy to find and is right off Interstate 4. Shimon is one of the most interesting and amazing humans I have ever encountered, with real life accomplishments that would seem to come out of a Robert Heinlien novel. If you gotta come from north Georgia, Canada, or wherever, it would be worth it to just to meet Shimon. I know and understand that December is a busy time for us all. But I anticipate this to be a historic FIRST gathering of the "leading, bleeding edge" cryonauts in FLORIDA and Georgia, and it would be great if you could be there. And... it is in ORLANDO, FLORIDA, the high tech recreation center of the universe. (The president has even personally asked you to visit Florida, visit Disney World, and spend some money:) So, if you know of any Florida or Georgia based folks who 1. are Alcorians, Cryonics Institute folks OR 2. Extropian in orientation OR 3. Are interested in the future, science, philosophy, technology OR 4. Just like to party... PLEASE let them know about this potentially "way cool" event. There are some really "cheap" but nice hotels available in Orlando if you want to stay overnite. I even have some free space in my house, about an hour away, so let me know. Even if you cannot make this particular time but think you might want to be informed of future gatherings, please email me with this data. Hopefully, someone at ALCOR will be sending an invite to geographically appropriate ALCOR people. This may just be a handful of us to start, but start we must. We need a sense of community, a chance to put faces with email corresponders, a chance to interface with like minded people. For those of you who have attended an ALCOR conference or Extropy gathering, you know the *quality* and *unique* people our movement attracts. I happen to genuinely like, respect, and in some cases love the amazing people I have met through my cryonics affiliation. (We also have wonderful wacky weirdoes, and I like them too!) There is no substitute for "meat space," eyeball to eyeball meeting. Email and even phone calls still miss the nuanced impact of meeting people in person and shaking their hand. AND, should you need someone to help handle your emergency cryonics arrangements, you want COMMITTED and CARING people whom you personally *know* to make your suspension happen. People who won't just "phone it in," but will physically BE THERE for you. So, let's develop some of these life saving, "foxhole" relationships, dear ones, starting early next month. Success is never convenient. Even this party is not "convenient." But it will be important. And fun! Thanks for listening, excuse the long post.
