Thank you, John, for your kind words.  Most people would call it
stubbornness or, more accurately, stupidity.  It deprived me of
the opportunity to acquire the level of education, which I might
otherwise have attained.  A few month after that parade I found
myself a 17 year old fugitive in West Germany with only my elder
sister and her husband as  support structure , who themselves had
fled only a couple of years earlier and were themselves
struggling to eke out an existence (this was not yet the Germany
of economic miracle fame).  Instead of striving for the career I
wanted, I had to go with the one, that was most expedient.
