  Um, remember that the salaries quoted are in GOLD dollars. Americans 100 
years ago still had more money than today's Third Worlders... of course the 
medical technology was horrible, but the medical technology that we are 
actually allowed to buy isn't that great either. More Americans today survive 
childhood because of vaccinations... but more of the survivors then 
deteriorate from sedentary jobs. We've made some progress, but nowhere near 
100 years worth.
