It doesn't seem likely, but for all we know there is some way to 
destabilize the fabric of space-time so the universe will self-destruct. If 
it's possible, then I suppose it's inevitable. In a few decades or 
centuries even lone terrorists may have the means--and some loony will do 
it. This could explain why we don't see extraterrestrials. When 
intelligence emerges, it wipes out the universe it's in!

Let's hope not. Meanwhile we must keep trying to make life something 
greater, not less, than it already is.
