I would say the *goals* of people of religion and science are similar - to live
long happy lives and to obtain justice.

Scientific people may want to live in this universe forever, and to make this
universe a safe and happy place to live. Religious people may want to live in
heaven as a safe and happy place.

Both want to live in a place where justice and goodness prevail. The difference
is the definition of these goals, and how to obtain them. So by emphasizing our
common goals of seeking justice and goodness, we might each find ways to obtain
that are satisfying to ourselves and not offensive to the other. But we
certainly don't want to start attacking each other if it can be helped.

One way to start the process of co-existing is to think of the other guy as
different but not wrong, not bad, and not stupid, and insist that the other guy
give you the same consideration.
