In 1971, shortly after we sent a man to the moon, President Nixon decided
that cancer will be the next target, and ratcheted up federal spending on
cancer research. He was sold on the idea that cancer was curable in his
lifetime.

Thirty one years and hundred of billions of dollars later cancer rates have
barely moved, with most of the differences appearing to be due to
environmental, behavioral, and nutritional changes.
