If politics underlies all important religious issues, how do you explain 
the Pythagorean cult?

Be careful with these words. "Pagan" does have a meaning "irreligious". 
But this meaning is distinct from the usual one, which entails the 
irrational religious belief. I'm aware of no one who entertains both 
meanings simultaneously except the Big-Omegasts, blurse 'em.
