References: <> Washington Post's article (see below) points out the following numbers about "Ted Williams'" cryonic application rush. ****************** Alcor marketing director Karla Steen said the company Web site has received more than 3 million hits since the Williams story broke, and it has distributed more than 1,000 application forms for service. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A41577-2002Jul21.html ***************** That was on July 22, 2 weeks after TW's death when the interest was at peak. One can speculate that additional 500,000-1,000 hits have been obtained on the web site since then in the almost 20 days after the article. Percentage wise, the number of those who took the first step & requested the application is rather low - 0.0003333%! That is in sharp contrast to the NBC's poll that shows that of about 4,000 polled about 28% of people would choose cryonics if it were affordable, and 3 % acceptance rates I've seen quoted on CryoNet and 4% rate mentioned in "Fitness & Health" or "Men's Health" Magazine published this year - read it myself. I am wondering why such a huge discrepancy in numbers and what is the actual number of general populace that maybe interested in cryonics? Anyone cares to comment? OK, I can see that NBC's poll was linked to an article and was dealing with the actual issue at hand, while people who clicked on Alcor's link came from a variety of Web sources - Washington Post, Sports Illustrated, Kalamazoo Herald, etc. Clicking on the link and browsing through the web site is not an indication of the seriousness of the person, but rather curiosity, which is a first step afterall. The application form is the second. Working out all the arrangements is the third one. Maybe it will help to rearrange the Web sites of cryonics providers to make a sign up section more prominent and popping up window showing up when you open the front page of the site, then when you go to the "Q&A" section, and when you open the "sign up page?" Realistically, knowing sales numbers and % ratios of people inquiring into a product and then buying it, one can speculate that out of the 1,000 who have requested the application forms, about 10-20% will follow through with all the insurance arrangements, thus adding additional 100-200 members to Alcor's roster within one year. I guess we'll see on July 5th 2003, one year after Ted William's death. Therefore, I am speculating that the actual number of people from general population interested in Cryonics is 4-10% which should be a good enough number to obtain momentum. Any comments?
