I don't see it defending itself (other > than here - but that doesn't really count, when our attackers are waging > the war in the NY Times, eh?). I think it is fair to state that this is the > first time anybody has waged a campaign to destroy cryonics, at least one > that has gotten any measure of publicity like this. > I disagree with this thought. Until I read, "The First Immortal" I was completely unaware of the cryonics movement. After reading "The First Immortal" I thought to myself, "I wonder if there is any factual information regarding this?" and started looking. I then found out about Alcor and CI and am now researching which would be the better organization to join. I intend to visit both facilities to help me to choose. So, reading, "The First Immortal" made me aware of cryonics. All of the Ted Williams publicity will serve to bring awareness of the cryonics movement to thousands of people who were not even aware that it existed. I would expect many of those people to "prick up their ears" and say, "Hello, what's this cryonics all about?" and start doing some research, as I did, and become cryonics believers, as I did. So, even though the Ted Williams publicity has incurred a lot of negative comments in the press, just bringing the idea of cryonics as a possibility at all to thousands of readers will do our movement immeasurable good as they become aware of it. There will, inevitably, be more "famous" people frozen over the coming years, each incurring more publicity, whether positive or negative, bringing the cryonics movement more and more into the public eye. We will reach a critical mass in a few years when interest and acceptance will mushroom. Any and all publicity is good to bring attention about cryonics to those who knew nothing about it before.
