Uh Oh. Dire Prediction For Blondes

By Cathryn Conroy,

If you have blonde hair, you're part of an endangered species. A new
study by German researchers claims that people with blonde hair will
become extinct by 2202, reports The New York Post. Why? Blame it on
Clairol.

Blond Ambition: Blame the endangered species on these celebs. They're
ALL bottle blondes. How many fooled you?

Blonde hair (and blue eyes, for that matter) only happens when the child
gets a recessive gene for it from both sides of the family. The German
researchers speculate that dyed blonde hair is more attractive to men
than real blonde hair so they are bypassing the natural blondes for the
fake blondes. The result: There are fewer real blondes in the gene
pool. Or so they reason.

Hey, it can pay BIG bucks to be blonde--even if it is dyed. (Sexy and
cute help, too.) Click for proof!

Unfortunately, most modern researchers don't seem to have a clue about
futurology. Had these had such a clue they might have not wasted
research money on this frivolous concern. With genetic engineering and
nanomolecular manipulation by the 23rd century I doubt this will be much
of an issue when people can choose their eye and hair color daily if not
at any particular moment.

Who Knew Ice Cream Could Do THIS?

By Cathryn Conroy,

Plain old cow's milk--the main ingredient of ice cream--could actually
PREVENT breast cancer, according to scientists at the Roswell Park
Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York. They're so sure of this, they're
predicting milk will one day be the mainstay of cancer prevention.

Here's something else you can eat that may prevent breast and prostate
cancer.
http://www.cnn.com/2002/HEALTH/09/27/yh.ask.soy/index.html

What's the magic ingredient? It's conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, a
minor fatty acid found naturally in milk, milk products, and beef.
WebMD reports that study leader Margot M. Ip tested CLA on
genetically-engineered mice that had tumors that mimic human breast
cancer. "The CLA changed the cells in the cancer and thus cut off their
blood supply," she said. As WebMD notes, cutting off the blood supply
of tumors is a cancer therapy--called anti-angiogenesis--that has many
researchers intrigued. And since CLA is all natural, dairy chemists are
working overtime to produce super-CLA milk products. "It's a wonderful
approach because you can increase CLA potency simply by changing the
cow's diet," Ip told WebMD. "The cow then becomes a factory to produce
a chemopreventive agent." She says someday--maybe in a decade or
so--we'll be able to go to the grocery store and buy CLA-fortified milk,
cheese, and ice cream. Eat ice cream. Prevent cancer. It doesn't get
any better than that!

Just in case you don't want to eat it straight out of the carton, here
are some tasty recipes using ice cream!

Excellent! I drink milk every day. Looks like I can reasonably be
assured of not getting breast cancer. Seriously though prostate cancer
may be the male equivolent of breast cancer and as my grand father had a
case of that with spontaneous remission (miracle from Jesus in his
parlance), I do worry a little about prostate cancer.

Suck It In! Scary News On Beer Bellies

By Cathryn Conroy,
Netscape News Editor

The size of our bellies is a better gauge of our risk for high blood
pressure and heart disease than almost any other factor. If we store
excess weight in our tummies--the so-called "beer belly"--we have what's
called central obesity. A new study by scientists at the National
Research Council in Avellino, Italy has determined that this pattern of
weight gain can lead to elevated blood pressure no matter what our body
mass index (BMI).

Skinny Jennifer Aniston said she was sick of diet gimmicks. Click to
find out her secret for keeping the weight off--something that she now
calls "a way of life."
http://people.aol.com/people/special/0,11859,237989,00.html

Reuters reports that the findings, which were published in the American
Journal of Hypertension, may help to explain the link between obesity
and metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that includes high blood
pressure, cholesterol, and insulin levels. If it is not treated,
metabolic syndrome can lead to diabetes and heart disease. And if
that's not enough to get you on the treadmill, a second study published
in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found a relationship
between waist circumference and heart disease risk factors. This study
of more than 9,000 adults concluded that waist measurement was a
stronger predictor of heart disease than BMI.

Do you know the BEST exercise you can do? Hint: It's simple and cheap
and almost anyone can do it very well.

I have reported this one before but from a different research group.
Redundant maybe but it can't be said too much I think.

Got Bear Market Depressive Syndrome?
One shrink is seeing lots of it these days.
September 25, 2002: 10:18 AM EDT By Jeanne Sahadi, CNN/Money Staff
Writer

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Can't think clearly? Feeling out of control?
Weighed down by guilt? And all because you checked your anemic 401(k)
balance?

If an overwhelming sense of inadequacy, shame and regret wells up every
time you see the Dow trend down, you may be suffering from Bear Market
Depressive Syndrome (BMDS). So says Dr. John W. Schott, a portfolio
manager for Steinberg Global Asset Management and chairman of the
Department of Psychiatry at MetroWest Hospital in Natick, Mass.

Added to this anxiety is the fact that one can't just direct one's
401(k) to divest at the drop of a hat. My folks are in danger of loosing
their original investment and don't seem able to get their 401(k)
managers to act in a timely fashion.
