In case of emergency in your town/Metro Area, you may want to have all the fax numbers of the hospital ERs programmed into your computer (if you have a faxing software on it). Prepare a letter clearly specifying your wishes and instruct someone close to you to send these 10-15 faxes with one click of a button in case there is an emergency and they have time to do so. Practice this drill with them as if it was a fire drill :o) - program some other number in that case (not the hospitals) :o) - The hospital will have the fax on their fax machine within minutes and probably by the time you arrive at the ER. They get urgent faxes all the time and read them. I think that you will cover your bases this way. Also, if you have a PDA Phone Combo (like Handspring Treo), you can do the same with their faxing software. This is more in case you are stranded somewhere by yourself locally and don't know if the person responsible for faxing your letter from your desktop at home will be able to do so. You click a couple of buttons yourself - hopefully you are still capable of this :o) after you dial 911 :o) and the same thing is accomplished. If you travel, you can do research about local hospitals before by making a couple of phone calls or looking them up on the internet - I use http://www.SwitchBoard.com a lot for looking up phone numbers by categories (in this case, hospitals in a particular town). You can program them the same way on your desktop (don't forget to add 1+local area code for the town you'll be in) or your PDA phone. Bear in mind that fax numbers may change, so you may want to regularly (every 6-12 months) call into the ERs and ask them for their current one.
