Condolences -- I lost my father just a couple of months ago,
so I sympathize.  My 40th is a couple of years old, but I
recall it was more traumatic to contemplate than to experience
-- a death in the family can certainly exacerbate that.

Progress is occurring more rapidly than I expected on some
fronts and less rapidly on others -- I've given up on
predictions.  About things staying the same, I think we'll
see recurring themes until we change human nature.  Big
Brother may be a problem, but we're smarter, so I bet we'll
do OK.

Given your situation, some depression is inevitable, so be
gentle with yourself.  One day soon you'll wake up and
realize your outlook is more rosy; till then, hang in there.
