Subject: Tegmark on Quantum Computers

On page 30 of The Universe Next Door (2002), Marcus Chown,
staff writer for New Scientist, talks about quantum computers:

"There is a big caveat to all this. A normal computer which is
programmed to carry out simultaneous, or parallel, calculations
is free to output the result of the calculations at the end. A
quantum computer, however, can output only a single result of
a very special form. 'Because of this, people have to work
very hard to come up with recipes for calculating useful things,'
says [Max] Tegmark. 'Its important to bear this in mind and
not exaggerate the capabilities of quantum computers.'"

Which was exactly what I was saying to Donaldson a few
weeks back.

Cheers,
Michael C Price
