A normal computer which is programmed to carry out simultaneous, or parallel, calculations is free to output the result of the calculations at the end. A quantum computer, however, can output only a single result of a very special form. 'Because of this, people have to work very hard to come up with recipes for calculating useful things,' says [Max] Tegmark.
