I suppose there's no chance of making use of one if you're alone when
you need it, right?

In that case, the need to be easy-enough to get along with so you can
live with somebody else becomes a life-or-death matter.  Of course,
you have to pick someone who is emotionally stable under pressure, and
you have to be wise enough not to pick a thief.  Hmm, I ought to
refresh my CPR class and bring my wife along.

There are other benefits to living with someone.  A neighbor of mine
broke her hip once and her husband called an ambulance for her, for
instance.
