PRESERVING PERSONAL IDENTITY: PHILOSOPHICAL AND SCIENTIFIC ISSUES

Ben Best is lecturing to a Toronto amateur philosophy club
on philosophic and scientific issues underlying various approaches to
life extension and long-term preservation of personal identity. The
summary of the lecture, which was given to the club for their
promotions, is as follows:

"Evidence for the materialist view of consciousness (the mind-body
problem) will be examined, along with paradoxes that seem inherent
in the materialist view. Implications of the promise of immortality
by religions will be contrasted with the prosect of immortality
through materialism. The prospect of physical immortality through
eradication of aging, cryonics and uploading of minds to computers
will be covered in a technical overview. Ethical, psychological and
philosophical issues concerned with death and immortal physical life
will also be discussed."
