Subject: "Man on the Moon" idea for nanotechnology

The "Man on the Moon" idea for nanotechnology is a nice one, but at the time
of the original lunar proposal the world was ripe for such a development.
Although many so called experts still thought and said "space travel is
bunk" there was just enough engineering technology there from which to
achieve this aim.

Is the world of nanotechnology ripe for a similar achievement? Is there an
achievement that would not equally well be met by commercial pressure (eg
improved electronic data storage)?
