You might be better off posting your queries to another list however searching 

on 'prion' at the Scientific American site http://www.sciam.com will give you a
number of pointers, in particular an article by Stanley Prusiner, the 1997 
Nobel Laureate in Medicine ("for his discovery of Prions - a new biological 

principle of infection"). The article is quite readable, contains references to
the primary literature, and can be found at:
