Subject: A mistake in latest PERIASTRON

To all those Cryonetters who subscribe to PERIASTRON:

I have sent off the May issues yesterday, already. In looking at
a copy of the May issue, however, I noticed an error of mine which
may lead to confusion by readers. It is in the caption & description
of Figure 9, which basically shows 2 bar graphs labelled A-1 and A-2,
and the top views of two (symbolic) heads, labelled B-1 and B-2.
Each of B-1 and B-2 contains 2 heads, with different white markings
on their top, and a bar in between them showing amount of activation.

The error in the caption & discussion consists of the claim that both
bar graphs A-1 and A-2 are labelled in %. The A-1 bar graph IS
labelled in %. The A-2 one actually shows the time taken for response
by a subject in milliseconds (msecs).

If you wish to save this message for use when your issue of PERIASTRON
arrives and you're reading it, a suggested wording for the last 7
lines of the caption would be:
"studied for a
long time. The vertical axis in A-1 gives the % of faces subjects say
they recognize; in A-2, times for reaction in msecs; long, brief,
and new label the bars showing the length of study in each case
(new == subjects haven't seen them before). The B diagrams show brain
areas in white activated during attempts to remember: left head for
each, items studied long minus new, right head, items brief minus new."

If none of this note makes any sense to you, then it should become
clear once your issue of PERIASTRON arrives. I have sent this note off
now because some subscribers may get their issues as early as Monday,
while others may take several weeks. I will send the same message
in two weeks for those who receive their issues later.

And of course I apologize to readers for any confusion this error
may cause.

Best wishes and long long life for all,

                        Thomas Donaldson
