Pure altruism can be just as damaging as unthinking self centeredness. Consider a married couple - if each is 100% committed to please the other then the result could be that they still fight to chose something to please the other. For example they could end up fighting just as vigorously over (say) which video to play because each desperately wants to play the one that (s)he considers will please the other.
