Dr. Merkle, called "...one of the few mainstream scientific geniuses
of the Cryonics movement" by Ed Regis and a researcher in molecular
nanotechnology at Xerox PARC, will discuss the implications
of research in nanotechnology for future medical capabilities.
Disease and ill health are caused largely by damage at the molecular
and cellular level. From the viewpoint of a cell, today's surgical
tools are more suited to rip and tear than to heal and mend. Modern
surgery works only because cells have an amazing ability to regroup,
bury their dead, and heal over the wounds. In the future we will
have molecular surgical tools guided by molecular computers. This
will let us, for the first time, actually cure cellular damage.
The result will be a quantum leap in our medical technology, and
an ability to cure many who are today viewed as utterly beyond
medical help.

These future medical abilities should let us cure even the freezing
damage caused by cryonic suspension: the freezing of the terminally
ill (and legally dead) patient to transport them without further
deterioration to the medical technology of the 21st or 22nd century,
there to be cured and returned to a healthy life.

Those interested are also invited to attend the Alcor business meeting,
held at 4:00, or the potluck dinner at 6:00; both at the same location
as the introduction to cryonics.
