I will add that as we come to understand how brains work, we'll
also get a much better idea of the kinds of brain damage which
raise questions about identity and survival (as distinct from
reparability, which in a sense could be done even without a 
brain!) and what can be done to restore or revive them.

Yes, one more reason to pay attention to such work. As for
ischemia, it already gets considerable attention in neuroscience
literature, with the earliest victory likely to be ways to fix
or restore broken spinal cords.
