HI Everyone --- especially those now subscribing to PERIASTRON
and those who simply forgot to renew their subscription:

The latest issue is now out. Like almost every issue, it has
a discussion of the latest work on ischemia of brains and spinal
cords (no, this work won't be finished even with spinal cords
if the only thing we can do is get those with formerly severed
cords able to walk in the sense of being able to totter. And
full repair of brains needs much more still). It also tells of
a recent NATURE paper which shows that our new neurons don't
migrate to our olfactory brain, unlike every other mammal
tested, and what this may mean for repair of our brains and how they
work. It also tells of a paper in NATURE GENETICS which discovers
that each neuron in fruitfly brains has its own set of dscam genes:
that is, which neuron a fragment belongs to can be found simply
by reading the dscams in its membranes. A little calculation shows
that this trait can identify far more neurons that in fruitfly
brains...and may again say something about brain repair to us.

MOST IMPORTANT, it has an ANNOUNCEMENT that starting with
the May issue (that is, after one more issue at the $3.00
rate) the price will rise to US$4.00 per issue. Naturally
existing subscribers at that time will not have to pay that
rate until their subscription runs out ie. if you were intending
to renew, it might be a good idea to do so soon.

And yes, I know who you are, and those for whom I have an
email address will get their own note about renewing.

Best wishes and long long life for all,

                   Thomas Donaldson
