Dr. Roy Walford, pioneer in techniques of calorie
restriction for extension of life span, has died in
UCLA-Santa Monica Hospital today of complications of ALS, a
rare muscle-wasting motor-neuron disease with no
well-established modifiable risk factors. Dr. Walford was
two months short of his 80th birthday. Present were Dr.
Walford's daughter Lisa and son Peter, as well as this
author and other friends of the family. Dr. John Braun of
UCLA plans to raise funds for a endowed chair at UCLA in Dr.
Walford's honor. Funeral arrangements have not been
announced, but cremation is planned for the body, with
scattering of ashes at sea.

I was very disappointed to read of Roy Walford's permanent death. This is
one of the best known life extensionists anywhere, and his death will be

perceived as yet more proof that life extension is merely a pipe dream.
Probably
unfairly so, as the cause of death evidently had nothing to do with calorie

restriction. Some of you may have seen the "Scientific American Frontiers"
program
with Alan Alda eating a low calorie meal with Walford, on a GREAT program
about antiaging.

How unfortunate, also, that Walford was not signed up for cryonics, a

reasonable "celebrity" signup, IMO. I have Walford's book, "The 120 Year Diet"
on my
shelf, am looking at it as I write these words.

He did not make it to 120.

On a personal note, it is my 20th anniversary today. Dawn and I are taking
the day off to play in Daytona Beach.

Regards,

Rudi
