Culture change usually occurs by appropriating and redirecting existing 
celebrations. For example, Christianity repurposed the Pagan Winter 
Solstice holiday. So, that would be one possible day. The Spring 
Equinox (Easter) has traditionally been associated with life and 
rebirth, which could also be appropriate. Then there is the mid-point 
between these, Groundhog's Day (emerging from hibernation is a good 
association, but this is less celebrated). These are hemisphere 
specific, of course.

The Christian, etc. dates usually deviate from the astronomically 
correct ones, so people could attend both, if they wished.
