A person who is competent is his or her own moral agent. Only the person can
determine what is best or what constitutes good choices. The theory of
autonomy as self-determination rests on the notion that an individual is
competent and can therefore determine what constitutes a good decision.

At the heart of liberty is the right to define one's own concept of meaning,
of the universe, and of the mystery of human life.
