X-Message-Number: 24638 From: "John de Rivaz" <> References: <> Subject: Re: emmigration/immigration issues Date: Tue, 14 Sep 2004 10:14:46 +0100 A further rallying call for cryonicists to emigrate to the USA appeared on cryonet last time, and the subject is debated often. There are several counter arguments (in no particular order): 1. If someone stays in his country of birth he has a low profile with the authorities. 2. Cryonics isn't certain to work, either overall or for a specific individual: maybe this is the only life you have. In many cases it could be better to stay where you are known and people know you and where you are content. At the time when death is the only other alternative, then the cryonic uncertainty and opportunity can start. 3. If you emigrate and then spend the time commuting to visit friends and relations, there is a greater and finite probability that you will need cryopreservation whilst alone amongst strangers. Such a life style could add substantially to your expenditure and therefore reduce any residue legacy to your cryonics service provider. 4. The USA isn't particularly welcoming to immigrants at this time in its history, even from the UK which could well claim to be its nearest ally internationally. There are no easy answers, this is just a few points the other way. -- Sincerely, John de Rivaz: http://John.deRivaz.com for websites including Cryonics Europe, Longevity Report, The Venturists, Porthtowan, Alec Harley Reeves - inventor, Arthur Bowker - potter, de Rivaz genealogy, Nomad .. and more Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=24638
