Subject: Please Comment: An info sheet I'm thinking of for FDGD
From: Kennita Watson <>

Some people have expressed concern that people would confuse
what cryonicists do with what was done with the Frozen Dead
Guy. I'd like to answer some of the possible points of
confusion preemptively -- if nothing else, it might save my
voice a little :-) .

This is all off the top of my head; if anybody knows of any
points I missed, or something I said that's misleading or
downright wrong, please bring it up. I tried to make the
discussions of the procedures generic enough that they could
apply to either Alcor or CI.

-- Proposed text follows --

How is the Frozen Dead Guy different from a cryonics patient?

1) Grandpa Bredo is stored in dry ice, which is not cold enough to stop
all metabolic activity. Cryonics patients are stored in liquid
nitrogen, which is much colder.

2) Grandpa Bredo was at room temperature for many days post mortem.
Cryonics patients are (ideally) prepared for storage within minutes of
declaration of legal death.

3) Grandpa Bredo was frozen with no cryoprotectant. Cryonics patients
have their blood replaced with cryoprotectant, and better ones are
being devised all the time.

4) Grandpa Bredo cooled at whatever rate being covered in dry ice would
dictate. The cooling rate of cryonics patients is controlled to reduce
the degree of cracking and other ice formation damage.'

5) Grandpa Bredo has only Bo Shaffer to take care of him. Cryonics
patients have an entire organization, including persons with medical
training, behind them.

6) Grandpa Bredo is far off the beaten track, and only monitored once
every 4-6 weeks when dry ice is brought for him. Cryonics patients are
kept near civilization, and have more-or-less constant monitoring.
