Subject: Cause of presbyopia

I understand from a friend of mine that a group of
optometrists did determine about 40 years ago that
presbyopia is caused by the continued growth of the
lense. This finding was and continues to be ignored by
the opthomologist community because the consider
optomitrists not to be doctors and, therefor, any
research they do to not be valid.

There would be a very simple way to determine the
cause of presbyopia and it could be done in one day
for about $2,000 or so.

If presbyopia is, indeed, caused by growth of the
lense, then measurement of the materiala properties of
the lense itself should not change with age. the
reason why the lense becomes "stiffer" is because
there is more of it to focus rather than the
properties of the lense material itself changing.

The way to measure the lense properties are to measure
the hardness and elasticity and, then, do a "nano"
profilometry measurement.

Get two sets of lenses from cadavers, one young and
one old. Send them to either Hysitron or MTS (they
make nano-indenters) and have hem do nano-indentation
measurements on the samples. This will take about 1/2
a day and will cost about $1,000. This will give you
the hardness and elasticity measurements independent
of the thickness of the lenses.

Next, send another set of the same samples to
Molecular Imaging (they make AFMs for biological
applications) for them to do contract testing. They
will do an AFM scan across the surface of the lenses,
which will provide the topography as well as the
surface mechanical properties (friction) of the
lenses. This will also take about 1/2 day and cost
about $1,000.

The fact that the opthomologist community as well as
the medical research community cannot be bothered to
do this, despite receiving millions of dollars in
research money each year should indicate just how
parasitical the medical research melieu, not to
mention the entire medical industry, really is.
