To Basie:

Living Wills are fine unless the legal system decides that you haven't
really died. That's the essential problem with Terri Schiavo. No one
in the argument really touches on this subject. For those of scientific
rather than religious bent, an MRI would settle this question quickly.
The problem is that even many Congressmen aren't of scientific bent.
From the statement that her husband doesn't want her to get an MRI,
if true, even her husband has a religious affliction.

And for such people no amount of scientific or medical proof will
convince them that Terri is dead.

Though I am hardly religious and therefore not the person to do it,
this activity makes me think that perhaps a active religious branch
of cryonics might convince lots of people. Some modification of
Seventh Day Adventism. After all, there are passages in the New
Testament in which Jesus gives his disciples the ability to perform
resurrections just as he has done. For that matter, there's enough
quasireligious nonsense about nanotechnology bringing about the
favored Millenium (we'll all be happy and all our wishes will
come true...) that it might not take a big change to make exactly
that religious version of cryonics I'm speaking about. Just add
those Bible passages and there you go...

Best wishes and long long life to all,

              Thomas Donaldson
